National Poetry Month: Explore Nonet Poems

A Nonet Poem is a nine-line poem where the first line contains nine syllables and the remaining lines each contain one less syllable.

Line 1:   9 syllables

Line 2:  8 syllables

Line 3:  7 syllables

Line 4:  6 syllables

Line 5:  5 syllables

Line 6:  4 syllables

Line 7:  3 syllables

Line 8:  2 syllables

Line 9:  1 syllables

An example of a nonet poem would be the beginning of my poem Hope which ends in a reverse nonet.

There is hope in the darkness I know

I just need someone to show me

Maybe write down the rules for

how to live without doubt

I need a good map

or a small hint

on where to

find this

hope

you

seem to

know a great

deal about it

please do tell me your

secret. I know you have

one inside your great big brain

there must be a secret to this

if not, oh why would life be so hard

Try it yourself

Remember it should begin with a nine syllable line and decrease in syllables until the last line that will have one syllable.
